Specialized Classes

The National Preparedness Institute coordinates continuing education courses and trainings for professionals in criminal justice, fire science, emergency medicine and emergency administration and management.

This 5-hour course will meet the American Heart Association guidelines for the Health Care Provider BLS certification.

First Thursday of the Month: 8am-1pm
Third Thursday of the Month: 12pm-5pm
First Saturday of the Month: 9am-1pm
 
These classes are open to the public for registration.

These class-required materials can be purchased at the Indian River State College-River Shop Bookstore and must be purchased prior to the class.

This 16-clock hour class will prepare students to safely operate an emergency vehicle.
 
This certification is an employment requirement established by the Florida Department of Health for anyone driving an ambulance and meets the requirements of the following organizations; Florida Department of Health, Division of Emergency Preparedness and Community Support, Bureau of Emergency Medical Oversight, and IRSC EMT Program.
 
Our EVOC certification splits the 16-clock hours into two parts, an 8-clock hour online course and an 8-clock hour in-person driving class.
 
The online course will be sent out 10 days before the class starts and will need to be completed, with a physical completion certificate to be brought with, before the in-person driving class.

Do you need to take the National Registry EMT exam?
 
This one-day course will:
  • Help to prepare you to successfully complete the National Registry EMT exam.
  • Identify your topic areas of strength and weakness.
  • Help you master specific study preparation and test-taking techniques.
  • Provide a comprehensive take-home study guide written by Dr. Bowers.
  • Review many exam questions throughout the day.
  • Provide you with a take-home online code to EMT Review Plus from Limmer Creative. You will have unlimited internet access to over 1,100 practice test questions.

Do you need to fulfill the State of Florida and National Registry requirement for a 30-four refresher?
 
This 30-hour course will fulfill the National Registry requirement of 24 hours for those who have not been successful on the NERMT test within 3 attempts, and will also fulfill the State of Florida refresher requirements of 30 hours (including 2 hours of Pediatrics) for state recertification. 

This course incorporates the National Education Standards which are the basis for the National Registry Exam questions.
 
Course Requirements

 

In order to receive a certificate of completion from the National Preparedness Institute at Indian River State College, the following requirements must be completed within one month:

  1. All powerpoint presentations will be viewed and any additional videos and articles embedded in the power points will be viewed/read.
  2. A score of 80% will be obtained on all five of the 100 question tests on LC Ready EMT Review web site. (these tests may be taken over and over until a passing score is obtained). 
 
*Please note, this refresher is not to be used to fulfill the State of Florida biennial recertification requirement

Do you need to take the Florida State Paramedic Certification exam?
 
This two-day course will:
  • Prepare you to successfully complete the Florida State Paramedic Certification exam.
  • Identify your topic areas of strength and weakness.
  • Assist you in mastering specific test-taking and study preparation techniques.
  • Review several hundred practice questions in class.
  • Provide you with a comprehensive study guide and a 200 question take-home exam written by Dr. Bowers.

Do you need to fulfill the State of Florida and National Registry requirement for a 48-hour refresher?
 
This 48-hour refresher is required when a participant has not been successful in passing the National Registry Paramedic Exam within 3 attempts. 

This course incorporates the National Education Standards which are the basis for the National Registry Exam questions.
