Selection Center

The Selection Center is an affiliate of the Criminal Justice Institute at Indian River State College whose responsibility is to process applicants through various means of testing to determine if the applicant possesses the highest standards and ethics including; honesty, accountability, and integrity, to become a first responder in the State of Florida. Students applying to the Law Enforcement or Corrections Academy must first be processed through the Selection Center. Law Enforcement and Corrections Academies are Selective Admission Programs. Applicants must review the Selection Center Web Page in its entirety. Please note that the Schedule and Cost of Academies are subject to change.

 

 

 
  • Be at least 19 years of age by the time of academy completion for Law Enforcement Academy and at least 18 years of age for Corrections Academy.
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have graduated from High School or have obtained a state-issued GED certificate or equivalent, as determined acceptable by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
  • Possess a valid driver's license. The applicant must have a valid Florida Driver License at the time of the academy entry.
  • Be of good moral character, as defined in the Selection Center Policy Manual. 
  • Not have been convicted of ANY felony, or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements as the terms are defined by law, regardless of whether or not adjudication has been withheld. 
  • Not have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Not have falsified their Application or Personal History Questionnaire.
  • Not have used marijuana (including medical marijuana) for one year prior to application. This must have been experimental use only. 
  • Not have had a suspended driver's license for one year prior to application (except for DMV or financial errors).

Step 1: Testing

PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE SELECTION PROCESS, THE APPLICANT MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS:

  • BASIC ABILITIES TEST (BAT score valid for 4 years) - $39.00 fee (Click Here to Register)
    • Please sign up for the correct test: COBAT for Corrections and LEBAT for Law Enforcement
    • Check with the Selection Center if you qualify for the BAT Exemption (Degree or Military); for Law Enforcement only per FDLE 
    • Test provided in Room 127 every Monday and Tuesday @ the TCPSTC
 
  • PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST (PAT score valid for 6 months) - $40.00 fee (Click Here to Register)
    • You must bring the original, completed Medical Waiver for PAT Form.
    • If applying through our Selection Center, you must complete the IRSC PAT; no other PATS will be accepted

Step 2: Application
 
The Law Enforcement Academies are selective. Applicants, if accepted, will be placed into the next available academy. 
  • Applicant must have passed the BAT or be exempt and scheduled their PAT before downloading the application. 
  • Refer to the Important Documents section below to download the application. The application can be typed or handwritten.
  • CJSTC 75 Form must be completed by a licensed physician ( MD, DO, ARNP, or PA), and the applicant must submit the original copy with the application.
  • Once the application is complete (please refer to page 25 for the application checklist), please fill out this form (Preliminary Form)
  • Applicants will be called in the order their form was received. Do not fill out multiple forms.
  • Any omission or false statements will result in immediate disqualification. 
  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted and will be rescheduled.
 
Step 3: Processing
 

THE REGION XI SELECTION CENTER PROCESSING FEE IS $600.

==> Phase II payment is not due until you have successfully passed Phase I and the Selection Center has contacted you with instructions on Phase II and when to make your payment.
