The Firefighter Physical Agility Test (FPAT) application is now available.  Scroll down for more information and to find the link to apply.  It will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Orientation will be in February 2026.  Specific date to be determined.

 

SCBA Facemask Fitting Appointments

 
For the Spring 2026 Student Cadets:
 
This is for a very important piece of equipment:  your facemask, which protects your face and airway from the heat and harmful gases that may be released during a fire. 
 
The fittings will take place on January 8 and 9, 2026.  Selecting your time is on a first-come, first-served basis.  You must take care of this before you are allowed to begin your firefighter training.

  • Academy Name  – Indian River State College Fire Basic Recruit Academy
  • Class Number or Student ID (Day is Class 189 and Night is Class 190)
 
Appts will be every 10 mins on the following days and times.

The Indian River State College Basic Recruit Fire Academy is certified by the Bureau of Firefighter Standards and Training.  The Fire Academy manages both the Basic Recruit Academy and the Pre-Employment Testing for agencies throughout the Treasure Coast region. From your Firefighter Physical Agility Test (FPAT) to the academy application to the required hiring assessments for local agencies, IRSC provides the training, classes, and resources you need to launch your firefighting career.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be high school graduates or equivalent (GED)
  • Must complete fingerprinting, a Level 2 background check, and a self-assessment
  • Must have NREMT Certificate (EMT training is offered at IRSC)
  • Must have been released or discharged from the military honorably (If Applicable)
  • Must never have been convicted of any felony, misdemeanor involving perjury, a false statement, or domestic violence.  An applicant shall also be disqualified if they have committed a misdemeanor that involves "moral turpitude".  Legally, moral turpitude has been defined as "conduct contrary to justice, honesty, modesty, or good morals".
  • Must pass a thorough medical and hearing examination
  • Must have the ability to participate in vigorous physical activities without restrictions
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License (An applicant may be disqualified based on traffic violations.  This would be due to the number and type of violations reported on their driver's license history report.)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must pass drug screeeing
  • Must never have been in a formal or informal criminal gang or associated with any gang members as defined by FSS 874.03.
  • Must be of good moral character
 
 
 

The Firefighter Physical Agility Test (FPAT) for the Summer 2026 term is scheduled for January 7, 13, and 16.

  • January 7th will serve as a practice day for all candidates.

  • January 13th and 16th are the official testing days.

  • Receive Letter from the Executive Dean
  • Receive and Complete Medical Waiver Form

An acceptance email went out on Friday, October 24, 2025, to each candidate who was selected for the Spring 2026 Fire Basic Recruit Academy.  Congratulations to all who competed.  
 
There will be two classes, one in the day and one in the evening.  Each class will have 36 student cadets.

                                                        Night Classes                January 12, 2026 to June 26, 2026           6:00 pm – 10:00 pm M-T

                                                                                                                                                                      7:30 am – 4:30 pm Saturday

 
*You will receive your Fire Academy Regulations Manual on the first day of classes.
